Sulphur hexafluoride gas (SF6) is electronegative and absorbs free electrons easily. An arc is struck between the contacts of the breaker in a high-pressure flow of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas. Free electrons in the arc are captured by the gas, forming relatively immobile negative ions. Losing conducting electrons in the arc quickly builds up enough insulation strength to extinguish it. The SF6 circuit breakers have been found to be more effective in high power and high voltage applications than other circuit breakers.
